Default timing?

Just retimed my motor. But its slighly laggy. Does that mean I'm a tooth off? And if I got a adjustable cam gear would that be easier to adjust ?

Why not just set the timing properly? You'd have to remove the belt to install a cam gear anyway, why not just reset it?

If you're unsure if it's even off, just remove the timing cover and turn the motor to TDC and see if the marks line up on the gear and the rear cover(I think in the DOHC case there are two marks on the cam gears that will line up). I'm sure you know this if you went through doing the job already.

yes, I just did a timing belt on my car and it ended up a tooth of on the exhaust. but, it seems as if your saying that you have a SOHC anyways the directions that came with mine were to
Put the crank one half tooth before TDC
align the cam gear
place the belt on the Crank, then the water pump, cam gear, and the idler. place 23ft lbs of pressure on the idler pulley and replace the tensoner. if done correctly the allen wrench will come out easly.

I did. Bent my wrench. But its just a pain in the *** to do. Since I don't have air guns. And it was a Half tooth in front. But would a adjustable cam gear be easier if It was all ready installed? I have never used one and don't know how they work. I know lines up every 2 rotations.

Reset the timing properly. I have never used or required an air gun to set timing.

he ha I suppose you could use a adjustable timeing gear to reset the timing if you were only a tooth off. but nothing more than that. the cam gears only advance 5 degrees and retard 5 degrees. and you would still get the code 11 because the magnets are on the other end of the cam.
