Just picked up a 96 Neon as a commuter car. I noticed that when the heater controls were on or I turned on the headlights the belt would start squealing, the headlights would dim for a few seconds, the motor would surge, and the radiator fan would turn on and off every few seconds.

Tested the alternator output which was fine. Belt was is good shape and tight. Started looking for answers online and came across a post of someone with the same issues. He fixed the problem by disconnecting one of the wires to the A/C Clutch.

Rather than cut a wire I removed the A/C clutch relay(fuse box under hood) an presto! Problem solved. All systems normal.(for now)

A/C didnt work anyway.
