Default need some quick help

I just did a head gasket on a 1995 neon. Everything seemed to go smooth, lined up the crank and cam sensor correctly. Car starts right away but idle jumps and it backfires through the intake. Do i need to have the cam and crank sensor re-learn or anything?

If i were a tooth off(sure i am not) would the idle jump and back fire like that?

And, it also will sometimes to shoot up to redline after i just tap the gas.

No codes.

The SOHC has a tendency to be a tooth off if you aren't paying attention. Did you rotate the crank 2 full rotations after installing the belt and double check the position? I've seen it more than once...

I'm assuming he battery was disconnected before you started, so the PCM will start relearning. But it shouldn't be backfiring like that. I'd say you're off a tooth, that's how mine acted when it slipped one tooth, and I didn't have any codes either.

Best of luck!

make sure the battery was disconnected, check the timing and check it again, look for anything you could have done wrong. Did you have the head sufaced?

We did not have the head re-surfaced cause the car never got hot. I am running out of ideas.

It was never rotated with the belt off, so i doubt we bent a valve.
