Default Overheating fans don't run

Hi there everyone,

New to this forum, but hopefully you can help me out...

We have a 1996 Neon. The majority of the time the car runs great. For as old and beat up as it is, I love it. A friend gave it to me 'cause the tranny was shot. I got the tranny replaced, and have been driving it for the last 7 months. Normally, I drive about 50 miles each way to work, without any traffic. However the other day, I stopped for about 10 minutes for some construction. I didn't have the AC on, but after a few minutes, I heard this bell ringing. I looked at the dash and the temperature guage was pegged on 'HOT'. I pulled off to the side, shut down the engine until traffic was moving again and headed out on the road.

It dawned on me that I never heard the cooling fans run in the 7 months that we had owned it. I've checked the relay with a volt ohm meter and it seems to be working ok. I checked for resistance on the two legs that it appears the relaty should actuate the fan and there is 672 on the VOM, so I don't have an open circuit. One leg is to ground as I would have expected. When I run a jumpber between the two legs though, neither of the fans kick on.

It's pretty tight between the fans and the engine block. It looks like the only way to get the fans out is to pull the bumper, the radiator and then get to the fans. Is this correct? I checked a Chilton manual on getting to the fans and it wasn't much help.

Has anyone ever seen this issue before? Any suggestions? I'd love to hear them. Thanks! - Eric -

Are you getting any engine codes? Also removing the fans is pretty easy. Its just the two (if you have single fan setup) or 4 (if you have a dual fan setup) 10mm bolts that are up on top. Remove them, disconnect the plugs and pull straight up pretty much.
