Default '99 Neon Gas Cover/Check Engine Light

Recently my mechanic hooked his meter/computer up to my car and discovered 2 things that were making the light come. The exhaust leak he fixed, and he told me that the gas cover (original) was making the light go on. I went to the local Advanced Auto Parts and bought a Stant 10817 gas cover (for Neons made before Dec. 1998. Mine was made in Aug.'98). I took it home and put it on and drove around, and the light stayed on.
Is there a better replacement gas cover for a 1999 Neon SOHC 2.OL? Thanks.

I have not heard of the gas cap being loose to cause the CEL to come on in a neon. Please get the codes. You can do the key dance and pull the codes yourself.

I got it off. I disconnected the negative cable on my battery for 30 seconds, then reattached it. It cleared the Check Engine Light.I know it was caused by the gas cover, so I didn't need to know the code. Besides, my mechanic read the code and told me just what it was. Thanks.

OK, so you didn't reset the PCM yet. Good deal. We'll see if it comes back on after 50-100 miles of driving. I have driven over a month without a gas cap and never threw a code.
