i've been reading up on putting a dohc head on a sohc block and was just wondering what is the averge horsepower rating for a sohc neon with a dohc head?

Just head swap? Stock SOHC pistons? You lose about 0.5 points on compression (larger combustion chamber), so figure 125ish flywheel HP.

A stock 1st gen SOHC is 132, if all you do is swap the head to a DOHC, you will probally get 120hp. You need to swap the PCM and pistons too.

From the looks of it, what is the point of doing the swap then?

There is a point to it. A DOHC gives you 150hp. It would be easier to just pick up a good DOHC and drop it in.

I may be misunderstanding it but isn't 120 less than 132???

Yeah, the pistons are different and if you use SOHC pistons you will have less compression than with DOHC pistons. And it won't run at all with a SOHC PCM.
