Default '95 SOHC power specs?

I've been poking around looking into engine swapping vrs rebuilding and various upgrades and what-not, and have come across more then a few places saying that the '95 SOHC engines had more power then the '96 and up ones? Is that right? And if so, what is the rated hp for a '95?

It is rated at 134 hp. Its just the cam that are a litle bit hotter. Other than that, it has an steel oil pan. From 1998 the head gasket problem whas solved, so go for an 99 and up.

The 95 Sohc engine had a hotter cam as stated, but you are talking about a 3up-4hp difference over the later 1gn sohc neons. The 2gn r/t also came with more aggressive sojc cam profiles; more so than the 95. Decent factory upgrades, but there is a fair amount of work involved with a cam shaft swap for a sohc. Would be wise to install a cam to make the effort worth it.

Well, it's a question about how much you are willing to spend on it.
You can get 200 whp with out turbo, but it will cost an arm and a leg.
In my opinion, a normal powerd car with a good suspention, bucket seat, and tires, is more fun, than a powerfull car with a bad suspention.
Spend some money on a good set of damer set Kyb Excel-G, rear stabilaiser if you dont have that, good tires, and a racing seat. I have these tires on my 99 Neon CS: http://www.kumhousa.com/tire/categor...F-A6DAED9DD99F

It drives on rails

A urethane bushing kit is a must and a great value for the price.

I'm not looking to build a race car, and cash is low. My car's a Sport, with a 5 spd and 307,000 kms. I drive about 90 kms a day. I'm probibly going to either rebuild, or get a low mileage engine to drop in. Suspension will probibly have to wait till next year. I'm looking at reliablilty, and some extra power, but nothing crazy. Its got an auto. t.b., the 3.0 CAI, and a high-flow muffler right now.

Well, you will get more power just with a low milage engine in it.
Here you have a link that are wery interesting. You have all ready the TB, CAI and sport exhaust. Get a Chrane 250 cam, and a DOHC computer, and you wil have 15+ whp

Will the DOHC comp. cause any drivibility issues? I assume I'd need one out of a '95. The cam is something to look into, though I'd need a header and high-flow cat (mines toast anyways) to get the most of it.

Na tuning i all about air flow, fuel and rpm. The dohc will give you a 7200 rpm limit, and a litle more fuel. Thats good with a 1500 - 6800 range cam. For exhaust, I'd pick up an tti long tube and a magnaflow cat. You probably ask, why a lt header for every day use? Its good enough low end power for that, and you will still have enough high end power for a good 1/4 time
