I have a 98 Neon with the DOHC 2.0 that I race on an oval track. This past weekend it got very hot and was back firing while racing. I believe that the coil got too hot and that is what caused this to happen. My question is, should I replace the coil pack where it has been overheated or do you guys think it will be OK. It doesn't look like anything happened to it externally.

I have put my neons through everything and I have never had a coil pack fail on me besides on the DD's. I have seen the heat shields they make for the coils, that may help. Your running champion coppers with the right gap?

 

Actually the plugs it has in it are NGKs. They are at the right gap

 

I have yet to hear about a coil pack on a neon overheating causing a misfire, but there is a first time for everything. I would think it would a plug missing or fuel.

 

I did put new plugs in it and cut the back of the hood so air will flow through and hopefully stay a little cooler
