That will let you view it. But you need to be able to adjust it. Without adjusting the timing you wont be able to get rid of any ping, and you wont be able to advance the timing for more power.

I explain it like this: The heat from lack of fuel, or from to much timing will cause the mixture to ignite before the piston is TDC. This is what "blows" up turbo cars. But this is something that people over look on N/A cars. While the rod is pushing up, the detonation or ping is pushing the piston down. People refer to knock, or ping as a light detonation. Most of the time you cant just "listen" for it, you need datalog it.
And I cannot check the link you sent because it requires a download.

I used a similar device made by MSD that retards timing under boost. I have never seen or used the crane one. As long as you can advance and retard the timing then iy should work great. But why not just use the piggyback AEM. Does the same thing, but also controls fuel. The aem is also a lot more adjustable then most.

The aem wires in between the factory ecu, and the harness. It intercepts the signals before and after the computer. This allows you to run on the factory ECU tune, and you can tweek it from there. I have never wired or tuned one. I usually always go full stand alone. But if I were to build another 1st gen the aem fic would be my choice.
