Both the AFX and Mopar PCM's advance the ignition timing and alter the fuel curve. The reason higher octane is required is because of the ignition timing advance. If you run lower octane you will ping, and the pcm may not be able to retard timing enough to protect the engine.
Octane is octane, but elevation plays a part. 91 octane is typically the highest you'll find here at 5000+ feet, and even 89 octane won't ping with my Mopar PCM, but the timing does get pulled almost 5 degrees from normal.
