I'm assuming you meant a '97 Neon Sport?

All R/T's had the 3.94 final drive with the shorter 5th gear (Performance "A"). If the Sport was a DOHC, then it has the Performance "B", which has the 3.94 final drive with a taller 5th gear (better highway fuel economy). If the Sport was a SOHC, then it has the standard transaxle, with a 3.55 final drive (somewhat slower acceleration, even better gas mileage). Either way, it's not the same tranny, but either will work fine.

Transaxles don't make power, they transmit power from point A (the crankshaft) to point B (the axles).

Best of luck!

I would have it rebuilt either way. that way you know its gonna be good and you will not have any problems, or should not.

I disagree with casper (agian) You can buy and install several used trannies for what it costs to rebuild one. Also a rebuilt tranny is just as likely to suffer the same problems as an original trans (ie diff failure, synchro failure). Also what is your current tranny doing and where'd you get the quote? I looked into fixing mine when the 1-2 synchro went. The syncro does not seperate from the output shaft and that shaft is a dealer only part that costs $1200 alone. If you've got issues with your 1-2 synchro you ain't gettin it rebuilt for $1200.

well basically my sync is out in 3rd gear, well its going out.i wanted to get my gear oil changed and they said its not worth doing it because my tranny is about to be fried so they was like i should go ahead and get it rebuilt.thats tha only shop ive been to as of right now.but yeah i found a guy sellin a 1997 neon sport wit a blown engine and i wanted to just take tha tranny and do a swap but if my shiyat is not gonna run tha same then ill just wait.

You can pick up a tranny at a salvage yard for $200-300. If the Sport you are looking at is a SOHC, then start looking around the yards (and www.car-parts.com) and the neons.org classifieds for any 3.94 final drive tranny (preferably 1st gen). If the Sport you are looking at is a DOHC and you can get it dirt cheap, then you aren't going to notice any performance difference... unless you think you can justify the need to keep accelerating past 120 mph...
