Default Oxygen sensor wiring

It would be nice if the wires going into the oxygen sensor plug were the same colors as the ones coming out of it. But it's not, hence as to why I am here.

Both the front front AND rear o2 wiring plugs somehow got caught up on the exhaust last summer, melted the plugs completely. This happened at different times, not on the same day.
From the car to the plugs are 4 differently colored wires. From the plugs to the sensors there are two grey, one white and one black. I spliced everything together, I know it didn't work. The engine has pretty much no power, and it runs hot. Melted a hole the coolant overflow tank, black soot at the exhaust pipe, and burned up spark plugs. And every once in awhile I get a Bank One Too Hot code. I need to take care of it, but I don't know how to get it wired, especially with the O2 side having two of the same colors.
Your thoughts?

What year was the wiring in your neon?

Is your exhaust clogged? Do you hear rattling? What kind of spark plus are you running? Are you burning oil or did you have oil in your plug holes (2.0 or 2.4l?) Oil getting into catalytic converter can clog it making exaust manifold pretty hot or a piece of the cat breaks off and gets wedged in the exaust choking the car like a bananna in the tailpipe.... you can hear rattling from time to time on harder bumps.

Have you looked at the rest of your wire harness? They are known for issues and if the exhaust got hot enough to melt your coolant overflow it may have melted the harness which is pretty close.
Best and easiest way to check is to unplug O2 sensors, speed sensor, Crankshaft position sensor, alternator and pull it all up to the top of the engine. Pull it apart and look at it, make any needed repairs and install fresh wire sleeves.

When you pulled the plugs were they all uniform in color or was there signs of oil or gas or just burned? Where some more clear than others?

Spray bottle with water while engine is runner. Spray coil and any gaskets and emmision hoses/connects and listen to engine idle change. Thats just to check for vacume leaks in places like the intake mnifold gasket and arcing from the coil/wires.

Only code is O2?

My apologies, it's a '97 SOHC.

Hi Clayton, apparently I didn't explain well enough: the plugs that connect the oxygen sensors to the car melted on the exhaust. I need to know how to hard wire these because the plugs are now melted and toasted. The problem is on the car side, there are 4 wires, all different colors, on the oxygen sensor side, there are 4 wires, three different colors. How do I properly wire these together?

Using water to check for vac leaks is a great water to hydro lock an engine. Use carb cleaner or starter fluid. Fluids are are designed to be used on the inside of an engine without causing more issues.

Cruizer, you might want to consider replacing the harness. A factory service manual (FSM) can be found on ebay for under $40, and they have all the information you will ever need about you neon. It states how to identify each wire. what it does, and where each wire goes.

Yeah... I had that happen.

1) BK: ground
2) BR/OR: heat control
3) DB/DG O2 return
4) BK/DG: signal

You don't have to hose the engine down. Brake parts cleaner works better but not everyone keeps it around. Videos on youtube on how to check for vacume and gasket leaks along with cracked coil packs or shotty wires.

Get the manuual for the car... it's well worth it.

You are better off pulling the harness out and checking it while your working on it now. Really a good idea to inspect for further damage and solder/shrinkwrap the connections. My car is a year older than yours and it was a mess. Only took about two hours and $20 in shrinkwrap/sleeving, and black tape. Eh, it's piece of mind.
Soldering the wire togeather and shrinkwraping it is one of the best ways to ensure it's a good contact and watertight.

If you have a ohm meter it's a simple way to check wire continuity. Check it all before wraping it up so you don't have to rip it all apart and do it again. They can be found for less than $10

Ugh, I didn't want to replace the harness, but thanks. Probably the best bet.

Considering this issue probably did damage you cannot see, it is a wise move.

Where can I buy pigtails for the O2 sensors, or a wiring harness even?
Having troubles finding these. It's starting to get warm. The Neon doesn't like it when it's warm outside....
