The famliy and I are looking to build a newer rod, and are thinking a 1st gen neon. as is my normal insainaty......must have bigger power plant. I've heard of some great toys for the 2.4 (ie. STOKER KIT!!!!) and was woundering how hard the swap to a 1st gen would be, will the 3.55 tranny work or is there a beatter one for this?

The 2.4 is already "stroked", looking at rod length-to-stroke ratio. Stroking it even more may make it even more suited for turbocharging, but it's definitely a bad idea if staying n/a. I'm not saying the 2.4 can't be a powerful engine naturally aspirated, because it can (Steve K's monster). And if you're going to turbocharge, there's really no need to go to the 2.4L, the 2.0L has held up fine pushing 600HP...
If you really most go bigger and want a bit more of a challenge, why not swap in a V8? It's been done once successfully that I know of (father and son up in Maine), and at least 2 other projects are in process.
Best of luck!

sorry it took so long to get back, been out of town. anyway i have the SOHC 5-speed, a 96 but that is the daily driver and not the project car, that will be a coupe (daily driver is a sedean) it will be a big project, in the garage for some time. i'm looking to get as much as i can out of a 4banger without going nitro, witch is why i'm thinking a 2.4. it will get striped down to the bare block and built from there. any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated. the last car i did was a 1973 charger SE with a 340 c.i.d., that was the newest one and smallest one i've done so this will be new turf for me.
