Default Locked steering

My wife has a 1999 Neon. Last night she shut it off and now the steering wheel is locked. The key goes in the ignition but will not turn. I tried wiggling the wheel while trying to turn the key. I tried raising and lowering the tilt while turning the key. The car is in park and she had the steering wheel 1/2 turn when the car was shut off. I searched the site and have not found this in the archives. I took the cover off around the ignition and don't see a release button. Ant thoughts or solutions? Thanks Jeff

my intrepid dose that from time to time, there is pressure on the stering, just hold the wheel hard to one side or the other and turn the key, it will turn a bit hard but should unlock. that works with mine.

Steering unlocked. Turned out to be a stuck tumbler inside the ignition. Hosed the inside down with dry lube, picked the tumblers with a paper clip half a dozen times the put the key in and worked it in and out while turning it and it finally turned. Thanks for the help. Jeff

Sounds like you need a new ignition. If it happens again I would replace it. Lube will fix some problems, but if it keeps happening replace it.

The key itself could be getting worn out if it still is the original. Anyways, if it happens again, I'm with Casper. Replace the ignition. You should get a new key with it, but then the key for the doors will be different than the key for the ignition.
