Default New guy here

Well guys, i've been looking around here for a couple of weeks and with all your praise about the Neon I decided to get one..

I picked up a 97 with 127000 miles, new timing belt, fresh air intake and good tires. It runs pretty well most of the time.

I plan to body kit this car and make it handle very well. I'm looking foreward to modyfing this car and having fun with it.

Best of all I got it for 400.00 and drove it home.

Now for the problems. When I bought the car the fellow told me that it will only run for about an hour and he did'nt know why.
The codes that I get are 12 51 14 21 55

The car seems to be driving fine and then shuts off for just a second just a jerk and the service engine soon light flickers. Is this a short???
Also the car seems to shake under power in 4th and 5th gear, back off the gas and it goes away.

all that 12 means is that your car battery has been disconnected within the last 50 on/off cycles

51 means your fuel mixture is running lean (not enough fuel is getting to your engine)

14 means your MAP sensor's voltage is outside of normal range

21 indicates a problem with your O2 sensor

55 means 'end of codes'. It just means that your engine is finished listing the codes.

I'm no expert here, so I'm going to pass it along to some of the more experienced members here.

Yea, I was able to check the codes from the Haynes manual. I am just guessing on what to do next. What should I do next?????

I replaced the platnium plugs with regular ones and no change.

The kid I got this from had removed the cat and replaced it with a piece of flex pipe. I replaced the cat with one from the pull a part.
Much quieter but still does that off-on crap.

Do I need a fuel pump???
Should I go ahead and replace the o2 sensors and map sensor???

I just love this car and hope to get it running purrfect.

Fuel pressure should be 49 psi at the rail. If you do need a new fuel pump, go with the Walbro 255 lph unit. Mo other mods needed, won't hurt a thing, and only runs $110 from www.howellautomotive.com (and others) compared to $350+ for a stock replacement unit... Plus, if you ever DO need the extra fuel (turbo, nitrous), it's there...
