i was just wondering what the cheatest way to get rear disc brakes on my neon, i know some came oem with 4 wheel disc brakes, how hard is it to swap them if i find a donor car

thanks in advance.

You'll need the rear caliper assemblies, rotors, pads, and e-brake line. Pretty sure the rear spindles are identical, but it wouldn't hurt to take a good comparison between your car and the donor car... You don't need to change out the master cylinder, proportioning valve, etc. Rear discs are about 16 pounds heavier than a drum setup, and really don't do all t hat much for extra braking (or heat dissipation for that matter, unless you do serious road racing/hillclimbs). Maintenance is easier though...

Best of luck!

im not looking to turn my neon into a racecar, i just wanted to get rear disc's on it because they look better than drums on the rear lol and the rear drums are annoying, the adjusters were messed up when i got it so it didnt have any brakes in the back, took forever to get them clean and working right

neons are everywhere here in junk yards, and all over the roads, im bound to find one with rear disc brakes

thanks for the information on the swap

i just did a search on our junk yard pc, they are goin for 20 bucks each side here locally, but make sure when you ask your local yards what the lug pattern is cause the computer system does not ask for that option, neons have either a 4 bolt or 5 with 100mm pattern, so be specific to match your front ones or buy the ones for the front to match the rear ones you find. good luck.

my neon has 5-lug wheels on it, even though the back only has 4 lug-nuts on it for some unknown reason [:'(]

PS. im having audio/electrical issues, is there somewhere on this forum i can check? or maybe a site that deals with it

In my opinion its way too much work with zero to little performance benifit.

The Neon 4-lug setup was never available with disc brakes. If it was, I would have swapped years ago. If I want to do the swap on my 4-lugger, it will require new wheels (and probably tires...).

The proportioning valves were year dependent and ABS/non-ABS dependent, not drum/disc dependent. Changed over in '98. Honestly, it wasn't enough of a difference to worry about. Just keep what you have.

The master cylinders for the rear disc setup has a 22.2mm bore as compared to the rear drum version with a 21mm bore. If you can find one cheap, great. If not, there a dozens, if not hundreds, of rear disc swaps working fine with the original master cylinder.

I wouldn't do it for the performance benefit. Wouldn't do it for looks/embarrasment factor either. The Neon's drums are a beeotch to sevice, particularly after a few years driving on New England's salted roads...

well im just doing it for cosmetic reasons, i dont like the way it looks with discs on the front and drums on the back when you have new rims that show them, i thought about useing the neon for scca, but once i got it and found out how nice it was i figured i would just drive it on the street, so when i want to go fast i have 2 other cars, rx-7 and a modified streetstock oval track car, i plan to try the show side rather than go, with my neon so im starting at the bottom then going up

thanks for all the help, i found a 96 neon 4door that is suppose to have rear disc brakes, $50 if i pull it all off myself in a junk yard here, no idea about what shape its all in
