wiggle the power wire from starter to battery...prolly just a connection from the starter solenoid to the battery...

Sounds like wiring or a bad battery to me.

could also be an alternator? check all the wires and connenctions on the starter first, then the battery for charge, then check charging sysytem.

If the alternator was bad there would be a code.

Sorry guys, I saw 1998 Neon SOHC and I have a specific question towards it. Just an exhaust question. Would a Borla exhaust Part # 14862 [dual exhaust] fit on a 1st generation SOHC Neon (1998)? On the website it shows only 2001-2004 2nd generation, but maybe someone here has Borla exhaust. If yes, can you tell me the part no.? Thanks.

99% of the time it's a wiring issue. The Neon, for whatever reason, prefers all connections to be shiny clean and stupid tight... If you have the slightest hit of corrosion on the battery posts or any of the connections from the battery (including those on the starter and the ground connections on the frame), get a wire brush and get busy. And if you aren't making funny faces getting the connections tight, try harder. There's the off chance that one (or more) of the cables/wires is fried, typically caused by a loose connection to start with.

Another 0.5% or so are a dying/dead battery. That seems to have been taken care of, but I'm not the only person I know that got a bad battery brand new...

Another 0.3% or so are a faulty starter. Pretty sure we've ruled that out by now...

That leaves us with two other options - the starter relay or the fuse. All the relays in the PDC (black box under the hood) are identical. If your horn works, swap it with the starter relay and try again. If the starter fuse is blown, replace it. But since you're hearing a clicking sound, I'd tend to rule either of those two out...

0.0% have to do with the alternator, which is not used during starting. In fact, you can start your car and run for a good 20 miles with the alternator belt removed... AAA recommended... Got me within my service range at least

My bet's still on wiring.

Best of luck!

Hi All,

I didn't want to reply until i tried all your suggestions. I just finnished them all today. I

changed the starter again, relays checked wires , cleaned connections to batter and wires and

so on. This car must be crazy it still wont work. I hear a click noise in engine also inside car.

When trying to start, i changed battery with my other neon and still no go. If anyone has any

more idea's i'm willing to try all.

Thanks Again for your efforts.

Its gonna sound a little weird, but it will prove to you that you still have a bad ground or wire somewhere. Take a battery load tester and test your battery, note the reading. Now, take the same load tester and connect the positive to the positive terminal of the starter and the negative to the bolt on the bottom of the starter(while your there make sure the starter is tight to the motor) and test again. You will get a slightly lower reading but not too much. If it is say 300 or more CCA different then its a wire issue. Also turn your headlights on and check the brightness. I can't be 100% sure but, I am about 85% sure it is a wiring issue.
