I have a 1995 neon, bought it for 800, was told about a few of its problems, one that I just can't conquer is my starter. I was having problems with it starting, so, I did the old "bang on the starter with a hammer and then start it..." After a week of that, I had to re-charge her battery, and then she was ok for a few days, well, today I decided since it was windy and cold to be a driveway mechanic. I took out the old one, went up to the auto salvage yard, got me a "new" one, installed it, and it didn't work. I took it out, applied some power to it, it worked just fine. I put it back in, it gave me a "click" and nothing else... I cannot figure out where I went wrong... please help!
Yeah, what he said....that was my whole reason for hunting this forum down...if not the battery clamps/posts, check the altenator, maybe make sure there's a belt there [] (yes that's happened to me)
ou can take the battery in to a parts store to get checked out for free. Just because the lights come on doesn't mean the battery is good. It takes a lot of juice to turn an engine over...
check the ground the bolts into the front motor mount bolt and the one thats mounted to the radiator support...ad the connectors on the starter...just dont over tighten them
Also make sure the pos doesn't have a any swelling. {corosion} Seen that before and make sure the connection at the starter is tight. Also might try adding additional ground strap from battery to engine. Just sounds like a bad connection. You might want to turn the engine over by hand and then try to start it. Could also be a bad spot in the flywheel.
Ok, got another starter, had it checked @auto zone, went home, put her in, cleaned all connections with a wire brush... and she started right up! Yay![sm=gears.gif] Thanks for everyones help!
