Default Low compression in one cylinder

i have a 95 sohc and for some reason in cylinder 1 (or 4 i forgot) i am only getting about 50-65 lbs of pressure and all of the other cylinders are fine. the mechanic said that it was a blown head gasket but i dont really believe that because wouldnt that cause water to leak into the oil? i have also been told it was a bent valve. but anywho help [:@]

i just checked the mil codes and it came up with cylinders misfireing, and battery disconect. whatever that is. i also got a code that has a dule meaning so i dont know which to believe, it was "ittermittent loss of CMP/CKP" and "timeing belt skipped 1 tooth or more"

Do you have any loud tapping noises coming from your engine?

When I bent a valve and lost compression in my #4 Cylinder - I had a tapping noise of the Cam beating against the bent Valve.

I also had similar codes of #4 Cylinder Miss fireing.

Also if you have a bent valve - most of the time you can take your valve cover off and manually turn your engine with a ratchet on your Crank and check each valve to see that they move smoothly.

On one other note - I did not have any compression on #4 - I don't even think I had 10Lbs of pressure.

It could be bad rings or the head gasket. It all depends on where the gasket is bad as to what symptom you get.

well wouldnt a blown head gasket cause water to get into the oil and would it cause the compression to be that low? how hard is it to replace the piston rings?

i have 190, 185, 190, and 85 compression on my 95 sohc, i am waiting for my head to be finished with the crane cam, header, p/p job to see if it is a valve after i get the head on. if my compression is fixed with the head swap, then i will be happy. with it only running on three cylinders, the car still does 16.8's in the 1/4, with just the mopar ecu, injectors, atx throttle body.

Blown head gasket symptoms depend on where the failure it to determine the results. Could cas low compressure on one or two cylinders, oil water mixing all the above.

That is one of the symptoms, and the most common, but the head gasket can fail in other locations that would cause low compression.

I have a 97 Dodge ram 1500 V-8 and am having problems with it. It seems that the #8 cylinder is either bad or clogged.
When it is cold it runs good but when it starts getting hot the check engine light comes on and it looses power. We have replaced the points plugs and plug wires. Is the car fixable or do I need to sell it? The codes test says it is ok when cold but when it starts to get home the code says #8 is bad.

Thanks
