Default Manual Transaxle Strut

How necassary is this strut? I kinda broke mine, and my 97 doesnt have the bracket to mount the strut. Would a chain work fine?

well i might have to at a later date. the motor is in and I am in the process of hooking everything back up. It doesnt seem to move around that much. if it gets bad im just going to put a chain on it. The car the motor went into doesnt have the proper cross-member anyways so it would take some fab work to get it in.
