If you change every 3K miles ANY API SM graded oil will do just fine. If you goto Synthetic then pic your favorite brand as they are pretty good and do very well. You'd do fine changing every 5K or even beyond.
Just remember for every brand you find someone who loves it you'll find 3 others that hate it for some stupid irrelavent reason. Choos the brand you like and be happy.

i work on chopper engines for uncle sam (the kind that fly). we use synth oils ONLY because they can withstand higher temps (1800hp@20,000+rpms@800+deg C). car motors don't need that kind of oil, unless you got some BADA$$ motor. like said go with ASI oils. the older your car the bigger you want your higher number to be. example: every 65,000 go up from -30 to -40 and so on. you shouldn't even have to do this if you change your oil + filter every 3K's. happy motoring.

RE: oil suggestions?
not so much a myth as cheap insurance. most modern oils as well as engines can go that far with out the oil change. it all depends on how long it takes you to get to the end of the oils service life. unless you heat up the oil long enough to boil out the water and other contams that form with most comut driving (1/2-3/4 hwy drive @ 60-70mph). my '02 strat says 7000 'tween oil, filter. BUT 3000 for hard driving (city and small trips). YES, I DO UNDERSTAND: the oil service life and add pack can go 7-15K before it is no longer good and really NEEDS to be changed. in the Army we pull eng and trans fluid 1 time every 3 mths and send them to a lab to get checked out (GO DAS!! [not making fun]). based on the results we don't do anything, change the oil, change the oil and filter, or flush the sys and send another sample and hope for the best. most people can't spend for the lab work. i would really like to know your point of view, NO BS!! this is just my exp.

$25 gets you a report from us, showing wear, contaminant, additive metals, along with the Total Base Number, a viscosity check, and oxidation/nitration number. Next time I change my oil, I will pull a sample of the Mobil 10w30 and post the metals and TBN for you all to see. Won't be for a while though
