96 neon runs badly (42/43 error codes)
Hi all,
I have a 86 Neon that has begun to run badly. It has gone from running well, to badly in about 20 miles. It now barely runs, and I don't think it will go another 10 miles.
The car spluuters and continuosly hesitates, and has trouble accelerating.
I think it could be.
1) Blocked fuel filter
2) Vaccuum leak
3) blocked injector or dirty rail
4) oil in the tubes
a couple of days ago the fuel gage was at0 and then jumped up to 1/2 full, I don't know if that is significant
Is it true that 96 Neon fuel filters generally don't need changing?
Any ideas?
Thanks for any help
Dave C

Heh heh, you said 86 Neon and I was like "No-way.." but then realised it was a typo :-P
Anyhow..
42 Fuel pump relay control ckt, Auto shutdown relay control ckt, No ASD relay output voltage at PCM, Fuel level sending unit volts out of range, Fuel level unit No change over miles
43 Multiple/ single cylinder misfire
I would say the code 42 explains why the fuel gauge is jumping. I would check your fuses and check your wiring for shorts before going out and buying a new fuel level unit..
As for your sputtering and such, give the car a tune-up. New wires/plugs (Stay away from Bosch and Platinum.. go with the OEM Champion copper plugs. If that doesnt work for ya, test your coil pack to make sure its operating efficiently..
That is where I would start, myself. I dont know how many miles your car has on it or when the last time any maintenance was done to it. Seems as though that is key with Neons to keep it's maintenance up as well as possible. My car currently has about 187k miles on it and runs great (when not in peices)
Good luck and keep us up to date!

NEONRT98,
thanks for replying! That was atypo, it should have been a 96!!
The car only has 67K, I have done maybe 2K since I bought the car.
I Have taken out the fuel pump relays, they check OK, the fuse is good. I've had problems with fuel filters on my truck, and the Neon is spluttereing in a similar fashion to the truck. I hope I don't have to pull the tank to change the filter, it looks like a PITA.
I'm off to Pepboys to get some plugs and wires, thanks for the suggestions! If that doesn't work I'm going to pull off the fuel rail and give it a clean.
Thanks again DC
In a 96 for the fuel filter to be bad is unusual, I dont think they go bad often. Try to stick to basics first, dont jump into dropping the tank right away if you dont have to! You can also check to see if your injectors are failing. When the car is running, unplug one injector, if the idle drops, the injector is OK. plug it back in and go onto the next one. If you find one that the idle doesn't drop, then you need to change that injector.
Hi NEONRT98,
Well it turned out to be plugs and wires, Champion Coppers and Bosch premium ingition leads to be exact. I'm thankful as I didn't have time to drop the tank, or do anything more extensive than the basic Plugs and Leads.
Thanks for your help! I appreciate your time and experience!
