Is there any downside to relocating? I'll probably be doing this when my neon goes into rally conversion mode, so trunk space is not an issue for me. I'm thinking safety/reliability issues.

 

You are making the current travel farther, so you may have starting problems. I know people who have done it with no problems and others who did not do it correctly(cheaply) and caught their car on fire.

If you do this and want to participate in the SCCA autocross, you have to have a kill switch on the outside of the trunk.

It's not SCCA, rather California Rally Series and Rally America. I'll check my class regulations for the kill switch requirement. I'll also be wiring extra lighting, some events are done at night. I'll keep the "catching the car on fire" thing in mind.

 

Usually it's people trying to use a 6 or 8 guage wire when everyone recommends 2 or 4!
