Default RE: timing

is it a dohc or single????
if its a single then im not sure how to check...
but if its a dual then you remove the inspection cover in the middle of the timing cover....then you rotate the engine til you see the two notches on the edge of the cam gears, they should line up in a horizontal line......then remove the #1 sparkplug and stick a wooden dowl rod into the sparkplug hole and rotate the engine slightly until the dowl rod is at its highest point(top dead center)....then check the cam marks again

Default RE: timing

if your timing is off 1 tooth, the car most likely will not start or will run like crap. that's the easiest way to know...
should throw a code 11 like racerx said.

if you have to hold the gas to the floor when turning it over then thats a good sign that the timing is off
