Default 95 SOHC Oil and Tranny Leaks

Got a 95 SOHC about 110,000 miles. Runs OK, but when the car is warmed up grey smoke will come out of the rear when the car is in motion(it'll come through the hood when stopped). There's also some oil spots on the ground toward the back of the engine closer to the driver's side. It doesn't seem to lose a whole lot but enough that I have to add oil here and there.
Also, one day the car would start coming out of gear-checked the trans fluid and it was empty! Like a dumass I put Dexron in.....After a few days of running around same thing(no trans fluid). This time I used the proper Chrysler fluid and everything ran OK(for a few days).
No trans fluid puddles on the ground and the car hasn't been run in a few months, just ran the other day and it seems the trans fluid stayed put(car gets into gear OK). Any thoughts? I'm not an auto mechanic so I'd have to take into a shop. The going rate at my mechanic is 60/hour. How high is the damage going to be?

oil leak sounds lie the rear main seal....in order to change that they would pull out the trans......so if you have them do that, maybe you should check some junk yards and try to get another auto trans and have them put that in there while the old one is out.....just a thought

Places to check would be the rear main seal, as mentioned by spud, oil sending unit, and camshaft position sensor.
