well ... i am now officially confuzzled...

i took the ol' girl to the shop today , and before i got in , i checked the oil (really for ****s-n-giggles seeing as how i figured it was empty)... .lo and behold would you believe she had oil in 'er? fresh , clean , un-nasty-fied new oil... 4 - 4.5 qt ....

could something be leaking around rear main , or is there anything you guys have seen commonly misdiagnosed as a rear main seal?

thanks

i meant its most likely oil , but is there anywhere that may go bad in tht area (oil pump , osu , etc) that might be mistaken for rear main seal..

Common oil leak areas are:

*Camshaft position sensor
*Headgasket
*Rear Main Seal
*Valve cover
*Oil sending unit
*Crank sensor

I recently had the exact same oil leak as you decribed. My car is a 98 Neon with ATX.

A Goodyear place told me it was the head gasket.

I took it to another place and they said it was the rear main seal.

The rear seal was replaced and it's been very dry under my car since.

The seal is attached to the Flexplate (that's what the flywheel is called on the ATX). The seal has some metal inside of it and the seal was worn so bad that a groove was worn in the flexplate. So I received a new seal and flexplate. My ATX shifting was impacted some too.

When they did the job they also checked my motors compression and all 4 combustion chambers were 210 PSI.

Good luck with your repair.

Frank

thanks spud and frank ... thats exactly what i had hoped for , i love you guys...

im just trying te get an idea of what combination of things could be misdiagnosed... i know it happens with all cars...

q: what should the compression be in an "ideal" chamber (ie , rings are seated , no blow-by , everything ok , and does a head gasket show anything different in compression (im unsure of the placement ofthe hg , but if i remember correctly , it should only affect the cylinders nearest or directly proportionate to the hg blowout...

thnks

a bad head gasket (normally) will not mess with all the cylinders.....just the 1 or 2 that its by......i think average compression should be about 190

your leak could be the front seal in the transmission... thats the easiest to mistake for a RMS

ive resigned myself to waiting to hear from this mechanic and see what he thinks.. if he offers to fix it all for less than a g , then im in...depending on the conditions of course...

im just sooooo tired of worrying about it ... i am ready to either fix it or sell it...

if i sell it , you guys got first dibs if you want it...
