RE: DOHC Head on a SOHC Block
wait you guys areconfusing.
shouldnt putting a dohc head on a sohc raise compression. the higher the # the better.
the stock sohc has 9.8 to 1, shouldnt putting a dohc head on there raise compression, even though you dont swap pistons?? and if you did swap the pistons, then your compression should go up even more.
someone help.

RE: DOHC Head on a SOHC Block
you would want a DOHC head on a SOHC blockfor what logical reason?
Single overhead cam heads are better!!!!.... lighter more reliable andminimal power loss and less crank drag on pulling an extra cam shaft.People seem to forget they underated this motor (in the books not the product itself)as not to take away from the DOHC's introduction. The DOHC makes more seat of the pants power due to better factory exhaust andbetter computer settings, you put that DOHC head in your car and without the computer and exhaust it will feel a little less powerthan the SOHC, 10hp to be exact, due to loss of compression using lower compressionSOHCpistons with thebigger cc DOHC head and also the lack of the DOHC's computer and tuned exhaust.
The factory Dyno of both Engines prior to production was 144hp for the SOHC and 150hp for the DOHC and once the DOHC engine was introduced they docked the SOHC down to 133hp so people would have a reason topay more to upgrade to the DOHC.So to me it doesnt pay to have a less reliable engine that will cost more to build.
Don't get me wrong either motor is a good motor because there isnt much difference between them in the way of actual output if you were to throw each one on a dyno side by side, but for a more reliable ride the SOHC engine is better, your better off spending the $500the junk yard would charge you for theDOHC engine on $500 of upgrades to the SOHC engine and be faster.
Quarter mile times between the SOHC and DOHC are not much different,
DOHC RT Neon does 15.9 and the SOHC Neon Sport does 16.1 with a more restrictive exhaust and dogwater settings for the computer. Do yourself a favor and find a DOHC's computer install that into your current SOHC carand use its exhaust or buy a new performance Exhuast with Headerand you will still be under the cost of what it takes to rip apart your SOHC and buy a DOHC head and pull that and reinstall that motor. With that stock DOHCcomputer and performance exhaust your SOHCwill smoke any stockDOHC with no engine mods. Just swap exhaust and computer with a DOHC car and your ready to go!
Unless of course you allready have the DOHC head and lack a SOHC head then be my guest and throw it on
