Default Mystery hose connected to air intake duct

Popped it off again and I just realized there was a hose connecting near the end of the tube opposite the air filter (the end closest to throttle body). On my car it's begun to harden and the other end appears to have cracked off. Where does that other end go?

'98, SOHC. Where on the valve cover? The Haynes doesn't specify I think, or I might have overlooked it?

Eh? I found a hole on the right side of the engine (viewing from front of engine, "left side"), on the backside across from the air filter. Once again the hose cracked off. Going to replace that hose.
