New to neons, stumped on cyl1 misfire, HAVE searched
Anywho....this isnt my car but was my dads and now is my girlfriends as my dad got fed up with it...my cars are a fiero and a 95 eclipse gsx...so thats as far as my knowledge goes...anyway...
the car is a 96 neon 5pd, SOHC....
the engine runs a bit rough, but idles fine...when driving around 3k-4k rpms it starts to hesitate and the CEL flashes and then stays steady..when I pull the code i keep getting cyl 1 misfire...this is what I have done so far-
New plugs-properly gapped
New Wires
New Coil
New fuel filter
Checked fuel pressure- when ign is turned on it spikes at 40ish and then instantly drops(not sure if this is normal or not..when idling it stays at 38psi)(do these cars even have a fuel pressure regulator? is it in the tank or something cause I couldnt see one..nor a return line on the fiel rail...anyway
Checked TPS operation using my pocketlogger that I use for my eclipse...so im not 100% sure this is correct, but its showing when throttle is closed its at 12% and WOT is only 72%, not sure if this is right cause with some cars it is..and with the pocketlogger software being for DSMs im not 100% sure my readings are correct either...
I also swapped 1st and 3rd injector to see if it was injector related and would change the misfires location...it didnt..
When the plugs are taken out they are perfectly clean, no black soot or oil or anything..just squeeky clean..no fouling etc..
I took the cam angle sensor off, not really knowing how to check it but at least to see if there was any visable damage..there wasnt..other then a leak, not really sure iof the magnet was supposed to be soaked in oil, but since its a moving part I guess it should...Thats about all I can figure out..only other thing I notice is when the car starts to hesitate and misfire, the o2 sensor reads a very lean mixture..if that means anything...
Please please please if anyone has any ideas, tomorrow im gonna just start swappin cam and crank sensors from the yard to see if i can get any change...
Thanks in advance...

when the check engine light flashes it usually means there is a problem with the exhaust system.....you might wanna check your cat...sounds like it might be clogged
fuel pressure regulator is located ontop of the fuel pump

sorry, but i dont really get how a clogged cat can cause a misfire??
Im dubious as twice i suspected a melted cat on 2 other cars and after crawling under to unbolt em just to find them in perfect condition...
I will check the timing, but still dont see how that would cause a misfire in only 1 cyl...
Thanks for responses...

Check your connections to your fuel injectors. Make sure your not shorting out somewhere...
I would double check to timing just to be sure, too.. Its possible the timing skipped a tooth and is off a bit...

well each tooth is probably like 8* worth that it skips. im sure it would be noticable if it skipped like that. It shouldnt idle fine with a skipped tooth
Yea, i guess ill go over the wiring with a fine tooth comb aproach....My step grandfather seems to think its a collapsed lifter...but i highly doubt that...

my durango was throwing a code for cylinder 1 and 8 misfire when the exhaust leak started getting worse.....then i took out the cat and threw a flowmaster on there and never saw the code again
