Timing belt question
Popped off the little look-through port to check on my belt.
Is the belt supposed to be "flush" with the end of the gear? Because I don't think it is...I think I can put a pencil through before I come into contact with something. Perhaps this means my belt is degrading? Belt was replaced about 65k miles ago.

no to be ignorant but,
the cover is there to prevent rocks, dust, water, misc. engine fluids, clothing, appendages, and other foreign objects to get to the belt and the idler assemblies......all you need is to get a small chip of a rock to get in there and get cought between the idler pulley and the timing belt until your belt starts to rip.....
picture this....imagine not having the cover on there.....then think about having the engine running while you are adjusting sumthing with a screwdriver....then think of that screwdriver slipping and going straight into the cam gear spokes....whats gonna happen????
or, think of dropping sumthing and making a fast grab for it and getting you finger cought in there[&:]
think about it a little bit and then let us know what its on there
