I was under the impression that the weak instrument cluster meant that alllllllllll of the gauges and allllll of the idiot lights wouldn't function. At least, the one I fixed was like that.

My speedometer also intermittently fails, but cruise control doesn't work either, and I have a check engine light that sometimes comes on. I'm thinking that mine is a VSS issue, now if I ever get it in to get that code read...
If your odometer isn't working either, then its your VSS.

my coup had no speedo or temp and was cracked conations, so it dosn't allway kill the whole cluster as there are 10 conections per side( i'm looking at a spaire board right now) i'm not saying it couldn't be the vss just in my experience it is the cluster plug most of the time, on a side note the odometer won't work if the speedo is out, that's how mine was

Odometer doesn't work either when the speedo fails. After checking codes the old way, no VSS codes came up.

Naturally, the tachometer also faded for a second this morning. First time I'd seen that.

Thats been said already and the VSS going bad will not throw any codes.

Does anyone have a diagram on how to remove the guage cluster? Also, my check light is always on aswell.

Push up on the dash (just snaps on) and pull it off. Then you can access the phillips screws that hold the dash in, remove those and pull the cluster out.

Do the key dance to pull your codes. It's in the 1st gen FAQ's up top if you don't know how.

I was actually following up to the statement you had said to me earlier. Funny though, my speedometer works when you fix it the old fashioned way... by hitting it. I think I've got a combination of VSS and gauge cluster problems.

I thought Code 15 had to do with the VSS, as that's the code I was anticipating.

Yeah, but it rarely triggers the code.

yeah the whole dash is like a Lego kit. thats why i call it my Lego Car sometimes everything just snaps in place and as for the door panel im not sure about 2 door ut there is prolly a torx screw behind the handle and one insied the cup handle to close the door if you have a window crank you will have to take that off too its a bit tricky prolly just a loose link cable inside the door not to bad of a job first timer about 2 hours takes me about 10 min to get the door panel off now
