Default Speedo/Trans Question (neon noob)

Alright, I purchared my 98 Neon highline coupe about 2 months ago. I have been driving it back and forth to work, just recently noticed that the speedometer will just sometimes stop working. Then will randomly kick back on, then off again. And will sometimes work with no problems. I figured someone on here would have experienced this before and could lend some advice. Is it an electrical short? Fack, I dont know. The auto trans is slipping as well, it will seem like it should shift and seemingly just rev and then KICK into gear. How much am I looking at to have the trans rebuilt, or is it worth my money to buy one at a wrecking yard? I really like this car, it just seems to be a lemon for me so far. But I am willing to try and turn it around, just need to some advice.

Any help is appreciated, thanks guys.

Michael

i would say if it slipps try changing ur transmission filter and if that works it will save u a couple hundred $$$ and for the speedo they all have that problem 1 time or another try tightening the screws for the cluster and see if that works or u could try changing itand it should solve ur problem,,

ur welcome,,and if u end up having to change the tranny i suggest just buy a secondhand tranny, having it rebuilt will cost alot more$$$,my friend hada auto neon b4 and had the same problem withhis tranny not shifting good and it was just the filter,,or u could always do the manual conversion,,anyway keep us posted[sm=icon_cheers.gif]

One more thing, the passenger side driver door doesnt open from the inside. (I know, sh*t) I am thinking just take the panel off and see if it came unhooked, but maybe you or someone else knows something I dont know. Again, thanks. [sm=smiley20.gif]

on the speedo... the solder connections on the board are cracked, common problem with the clusters of the day more so with the neons. to fix it you need to remove the cluster and take the board off the back, then reflow the solder on the backside of the connections, you may need to add solder to some, if so use silver rosin-core. it is a half hour job at most. i've done both of my neons and a few for freinds, it's not that hard. good luck

I was under the impression that the weak instrument cluster meant that alllllllllll of the gauges and allllll of the idiot lights wouldn't function. At least, the one I fixed was like that.

My speedometer also intermittently fails, but cruise control doesn't work either, and I have a check engine light that sometimes comes on. I'm thinking that mine is a VSS issue, now if I ever get it in to get that code read...
