They are a little wider and longer, so more oil goes in. Its also a Caravan filter. Early year Viper filters work.

It holds about a 1/4 of a quart more.

Its the same filter the Caravan or Intrepid use. Some people like to say, "I have a Viper filter on my neon." I guess it makes the neon faster if you say Viper filter, but slower if you say Caravan filter.

Default RE: oil filter

If your looking for a larger filter!!The early Neons were manufactured using oil filter Fram number PH-16, Mopar number 5281090. This filter is has been superseded by Fram number PH-3614, Mopar number 4105409. This change applies to all Neons, regardless of date of manufacture. The reason for the change is the old filter's size and location, hanging below the engine, which makes it vulnerable to being hit and punctured. Some Neon owners who are aware of this risk still prefer to use the old filter due to its larger filtering area.

SUBJECT: 2.0L/2.4L Engine Oil Filter Application

NO: 09-03-96

GROUP: Engine

DATE: Mar. 1, 1996
THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 09-05-95 DATED APR. 7, 1995 AND 09-15-95 DATED JUN. 30, 1995 WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. REVISIONS INCLUDE ADDITIONAL MODELS AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION IN THE DISCUSSION.

MODELS:
1995- 1996 (JA) Breeze/Cirrus/Stratus
1995- 1996 (PL) Neon
1996 (JX) Sebring Convertible
1996 (NS) Town & Country/Caravan/Voyager
1996 (GS) Chrysler Voyager (European Market)

NOTE: THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 2.0L OR 2.4L ENGINE EXCEPT (FJ) AVENGER/SEBRING COUPE/TALON.

DISCUSSION:
Vehicles equipped with a 2.0L or 2.4L engine now have oil filter P/N 4105409 installed when shipped from the assembly plant. This oil filter is smaller in diameter and shorter than oil filter, P/N 5281090, commonly found on most Chrysler products.

The smaller oil filter, P/N 4105409, is specified for the applications listed above to provide additional ground clearance. It should be used whenever a filter is changed, regardless of what filter was on the vehicle before service. Failure to use the correct oil filter may result in oil filter damage.

The smaller oil filter, P/N 4105409, must be changed every time the oil is changed on all 2.4L engine equipped vehicles and 2.0L equipped JA and GS vehicles. Filter maintenance intervals have not changed for any other vehicles.
