Default coolant leak confusion

My girlfriend has a 1998 Neon that recently started leaking coolant. She took it to a garage and they say it needs a new head gasket. I dont understand how that has anything to do with an external coolant leak. Are they right or are they just trying to get her to hand over some credit cards?

Thanks

Depends. The head gasket holds the coolant in the passages and separates it from oil, combustion chambers and the outside world. Depending on where it is coming form it is entirely POSSIBLE! Now saying that understand I have not seen it.
