Default radiator fan relay keeps burning out

the part is over $100 at the dealer...i'm at a dead #3 now, $200 down the tubes (plus the original factory one).

would could be making it burn out? doesnt die right away, but after a few months of driving..

at this point i'm really pissed and thinking to just run some wires into cabin to a flip switch and just turn the fan on/off manually, as required.

anyone got better ideas?? get old one from junkyard? cover it with some metal shield to dissipate heat? stop using A/C or Heat?

Have you checked the fan motor? It may be dragging, dry bearings etc. causing it to draw too much current. There isn't much else to check unless you have a short somewhere. By the way these relays are standard on a lot of vehicles Dodge, GM and Ford. I found some new ones at auto surplus store awhile ago for $2.99 each. $100 is a big dealer rippoff.

One other possibility is a bad relay socket that is not making a good connection this can causing excessive heating of the relay connector pins.

i have 97 neon SOHC

how do i check if the socket is bad? i'm not exactly an electrician.

also, to the person who posted link to 3 dollar relays, thanks for making me cry. The question is tho, how to actually hook it up -- i doubt it matches chrysler socket?

thanks for everyones comments.

The 96 relay is different than the 97-99 relay though.

^^^Uh, did you replace the fan relay? Swap it with the horn relay to see if it works.
