i have a 96 neon sport with the 2.0 sohc engine. i am changing the head gasket and cannot get the harmonic balancer pulley off of the crankshaft.i have the retaining bolt removed and have been breaking pullers trying to get the pulley off. i looked on alldata's website and there is some special chrysler tool used as an 'insert' to use with the puller to remove the damper. as far as i can tell... the pulley covers the end of the c-shaft so that i have to push against the retainer bolt that goes into the crankshaft so that i have something to push against. is this right? any advice? thanks

 

Yep. Most good pullers come with a few different tips for the main shaft. Screw in the balancer bolt about 1 full turn and, start with the pulling. Go slow, watch for walking on the bolt, and have fun. lol. Oh yeah....Use the shortest arms you can, this keeps the puller from moving so much.

 

Go to Autozone and ask them for Part #27139 for the puller. Just ask for that, use the side motor mount bolt as the insert and pull it off. Make sure you attach the arms of the puller to the inside of the pulley and not the outside.

 

if you get the good puller then it actually comes with push rods for the insert

 

jimustanguitarwe are doing the same job but, I'm a little bit ahead of you for now anyway. das2123 has the right answer. I spent 6 hours. Bent all kinds of bolts and 3 finger pullers. I finally went to Autozone and got that puller and it came off in a couple minutes with the help of my impact.

Im on my 3rd day trying to get pulley back on.I learned that theres no way the pulley will go on without torching it first.I've went thru 3 bolts so far.I've got about another 3/8 to go and Im all the way on.Going to take it to a garage today to torch and wrench away again.I'd like to **** in the cheerios of the guy who came up with that design...lmao
