Default 88 Starts Sometimes

My dads 88 318 sometimes will start with no problem and run like a clock, but then it may not start. It will turn over with very good power, but with no fire and no fuel from the TB. Any time I check for codes it always flashes the 5-5. Any ideas? Mileage is a bit over 100k.

When it will not start, do you hear the fuel pump running? If not I would check the ASD (auto shutdown relay) and associated wiring.

So the ASD kills the spark too?

It provides power to the fuel pump, coil, O2 sensor, and computer.

There are 3 or 4 relays just under the drivers side hood spring. It is the third from the front. Like any relay it can be tested with a multi-meter. Also check for supply voltage to the relay.

Seal, Thanks for the info. I'm gonna work on it this weekend and get back with the results.

I found the relay. Seems as if it were the second one cause it was the only one that shut the Ram down when disconnected.

Relay checked out ok, so I cleaned the contacts (they were quite tarnished). We will see if it keeps running from here on.

Thanks

IIRC those relays cost about $15 each from the dealer, a couple bucks less online. But believe me, it's cheaper to go junkyarding and buy a bag full for five bucks. Even if not all of them work, oh well, you get one good one and you save money. I still have a bag of miscellaneous Chrysler relays from the Intrepids I've owned recently. Any time you go in a junkyard, find the freshest Chrysler products out there and pull all four of them. They do interchange for the most part. Match up part numbers if you want to.

Still haven't gotten this worked out.

Against my better judgment, my dad went out and bought a new computer, but the problem still exists. I know the relay is fine. I need to get this tracked down, anymore ideas?
