Default 1986 ram pickup v8 jerking from standstill.

1st post ,

thanks for being here.

yesterday i picked up an 86 ram pickup, it shudders and jerks from standstill, but once its moveing its good, it does not have any symptoms in reverse. so im thinking its the transmittion? rear wheel drive 2 wheel drive.

trans fluid seems clean and recently replenished. clean red colour and no smell.

i am not a mechanic. but im 43 and good with my hands, is my best option to have it looked at by a local transmission place ($900) buy a good replacement and install it myself ($700) or take it apart in my drive and try to fix it? (case of beer)

any advoice or help appreciated, apart from this issue its a beauty.

Well, when I'm faced with this situation I would get a new filter and gasket for the tranny. I would change them and the fluid and add a bottle of Lubegard to the fluid...add it first so you don't overfill the tranny fluid. Also make sure the jerking is coming from the tranny and not the rearend. If the rear has Sure-grip(positraction) it might be chattering also? Check motor mounts and tranny mount also.

It might be the u-joint on the drive-shaft is going bad. Maybe under the initial load/higher torque, it's binding. It's an easy, cheap repair attempt.
