Default engine ID and best carb

hello all I am new to this site and dodges altogeather. either way i have a 86 d150 with a V8. now i am not sure what motor ithas in it. stock is supposed to be a 318 with a 2 bbl, i know its still the LA series engine but it has a 4bbl. I am not sure if someone swapeda 360 into it or if they just put the 4bbl intake and carb on it. to my 2nd part of the question. what carb should i get for this if its a 318. i was thinking gettng a 500-570 cfm carb due to the small motor to try and save a few $$ in MPG. let me know your thoughts

thanks
ms

a 600 cfm performer series edelbrock is a pretty good choice, they run pretty well out of the box without a bunch of tuning, if you want to know what motor it is, get under the truck and look on the drivers side of the block just below the cylinder head towards the rear of the motor, there should be numbers cast in the block there and some of the numbers will be dates of casting and other will be displacement, 318 or 360...

My buddy has a edelbrock 600 sitting outside his garage. Neither one of us was impressed to say the least by Edelbrock's performance. Will it run, yeah. Well? Not so much. I'd go with a Holley, and imho you're probably right on with the size if you're not going to do much with the motor.

i dont want to start an arguement, but i like my edelbrock, not so much performance carbs though, holleys (when tuned CORRECTLY, which takes time) will outperform the edelbrocks, but for out of the box stuff id rather run the edelbrock....

Me and about all the mechanics I work with eather use Edelbrock or Demon, Ive tried a couple Holleys but they always jump out of adjustment, run rich etc... I use Edelbrock in all my trucks/cars.

Running rich is a problem with the tuner, not the carb. Pretty sure Demons are a holley-based design, just higher end.

Some dip**** Chevy mechanic recommended that I get a Performer 750 for my old Ram, what a turd. An out of the box 600 holley netted me ~100hp peak gains. Yeah, the 750 was too much carb and not tuned, but I'm not going to give them a second chance. Then my buddy went with a 600 Performer and got phenominal gains by switching to the Holley as well, but not near as good as mine.

100 horses from a simple carb swap..... i think not, im think you meant 10, if it was that good id do it too! and judging on the cfm of those carbs im guessing its not some sort top fuel motor so gains like that are not possible.... yes demons sure do look like holleys! i guess im biased bc the holly i got on my other 80 d-150 aint runnin right.....

No, I mean one hundred horsepower at the tires. And you're right, it's not a top fuelie, it's a rebuilt 360 with 90k miles on it, edelbrock intake manifold, 14x4 K&N, msd blaster high vibration coil, mopar orange ecu & distributor, and hooker comp headers into a 3" flowmaster 30 series.

I've got the dyno charts right in front of me, and I've posted them before here.

Edelbrock:
4800 rpm = 59.1hp, 64.7 lb-ft Yes, I typed those correctly. Fifty-nine horsepower, sixty-four pound-feet.

peak hp made at 2800 rpm with 100.3 hp
peak tq made at 2200 rpm with 224.7 lb-ft
average hp = 83.6
average tq = 136.8

Holley:
4800 rpm = 165hp, 180 lb-ft

peak hp made at 4200 rpm with 173.1 hp
peak tq made at 2500 rpm with 250.9 lb-ft
average hp = 155.5
average tq = 222.5

That's just an example. It took the Edelbrock 10.38 seconds to accellerate the rollers up to 4800 rpm, whereas the Holley did it in 4.5. We all know that peak numbers don't mean all that much, it's everything under the curve that matters, so those average figures are really telling.

And it wasn't them manipulating the dyno to show the results - when I picked up the truck after Bob did the work and put the Edelbrock on, the truck was noticably slower than before all of the above parts were installed. When I left the dyno shop with the Holley, it hauled ***.

Maybe there was something wrong with the Edelbrock, but if that's the case I got TWO bad Edelbrocks in a row, since I swapped the first one out with another identical one before going to the Holley. I'll fully admit, since Bob talked me into that 750 I trusted his expertise and I was let down. He said they had a lot of problems with the 600 Edelbrocks and that the 750 would work great. After I swapped to the Holley, he came back and said "oh, I thought you wanted economy instead of power". Yeah. I got the same, if not better, mileage with the Holley and all that other stuff than I did stock, and that was after I put the 5" lift and 35" tires on.

its say that is a MAJOR difference, but i cant help but think there was something wrong with that eddie carb, carb swaps usually only net about 10 horses at most
