Default New Truck and New to Forum

Just saying hello! I'm excited to be joining the forum, and proud to announce I bought my first Dodge after years of bein a Chevy guy (well, i still am LOL). I picked up this nice ole' beater at auction this week for $500. She's in fairly decent shape, and I intend to spend the next couple years or so performin' restoration and mods. I'd like to get a paint job at some point, probably a nice cherry red. She's got a 5.9 Magnum, so I am introducing myself on this 1st gen and 2nd gen forums to discuss engine perforamnce as I am learning about it! Thanks

Welcome aboard. If you were a Chevy guy, you'll do fine with an old ram. They are incredibly similar in many way. SB engines are put together pretty much the same (except that Cevy never had a true MPFI in the trucks). Once looking at a long block, the only real differences are that Dodgeuses the timing cover for the back of the water pump and the distributor does not go through the intake manifold. Inside the engine, the three major differences are the way the pick up tube attaches (pipe thread on the tube for Mopars), a camshaft retainer plate and the rocker shafts in place of studs (mucheasier to install and no adjustment). You'll find the same manual transmissions and transfer cases under them. Step back to the '70's and you'll get the same front axles. Just a little further back and the rears are Spicer for both too (except half tons).

AMC realized this, and started combining Mopar and GM parts (andFerd ignitions). You're old Wagoneer might havea 360 AMC driving a TF727 or a TH350 in front of the same New Process T-cases Dodge and Chevy have both used for 4 decades (now called New Venture), it'll have a GM brake system up front on the spicer axle.

It's really kind of interesting when you start looking beyond the cosmetics and brand loyalty, especially in the earlier years. Honestly, You can do a similar build on a 350 & a 360 (and might as well throw in a 351) and end up with similar numbers for a similar price (GM usually running a little less on SB parts)

So hang around and enjoy.
