im not sure what my tire pressure is, but i just got new tires put on so im sure the pressure is fine. i was thinkin it might be my cat cuz when i rev it up a little or let it coast in a gear the exhaust pops like crazy. im taking it real easy on the truck cuz of the milage on the engine, so im not to much of a lead foot. i dont put anti-icing additives inwith the gas,so it cant be that. iwanted tosee what the main reason i could be gettin bad mpg before i just go and replace my cat, im a little low on cash, like most people. what do you guys think wouldbe best todo first to try and improve my mpg?
thanks guys

RE: two questions
ok thanks for all the help guys. in the morn i will check the tire pressure. oh and if i do punch the cat it wont mess anything up or lower my mpg morewill it? the last think i need is for my truck to crap the bed on me. i dont think the cat is fully pluged up, i think its getting there. ill also check my vac lines for cracks. oh speakingof that i have one line that comes off the char. can that isnt hooked up to anything, and the emissions diagram didnt show that line, all the other lines that are shown are hooked up tho.

RE: two questions
all im woried about is raising the mpg, so if you guys think my mpg will be better if i punch a hole just through the middle of the cat will help, then how would i go about doing this? just take the muffler off and jamb a rod throughthe middle of the catand im done? will all the stuff from the cat go out the tail pipe after a wile?

ok my first question is what kind of solvent do i use to clean my crank filter?
Pour some gas or carburetor cleaner in and slosh it around, dump it out, shake let it dry for a while and pour 30 weight oil in, let it drain and put it back on.

RE: two questions
heres what to do:
go out and buy a peice fo exaust pipe that will fit where the cat is (make it fit inside the existing system, rather than around it). Remove the cat, put the test piece in, and drive around for a week or two checking your mpgs (yes i know - illegal). If your mpgs go up, you can just leave the test peice there and put the cat on when you go for emissions.
Or if you wanna be "stealthy" you can soak the cat in brake fluid overnight (makes it easier). In the mornining empty the bugger out with a hammer and rod (ps, the **** in your cat causes lung cancer, the bake fluid should help with dust flying everywhee. Also, the platinum inside can be cashed in for money). Now take your undersized test piece, slide the cat overtop, and then install it as before. And there you go, hidden straight pipe cat.
the nasty way:
disconnect the cat from the rear. hammer like hell. hit the ignition and gas hard. repeat untill you are deaf. rehook and enjoy poisoning people so you can save 3 bucks a fillup.
a note:
If your model is ODB-II (mine isnt, i dunno about the magnums, but i think its 96+) your check engine light will turn on because there is a sensor after the cat. ODB-I should not give you any hassle (isnt the "message center" useful?)
lastly:
Ive heard of somebody putting something into his gas....I dont remember what....but he said it created fumes that ate the insides of the cat, which then got blown into his muffler where he heard 'em rattling around for a month or so untill they totally burned up. Can anyone confirm this or identify the mystery additive?
