WHAT DOES IT TAKE & WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?
OK, SO HERE'S THE DEAL. I HAVE KIND OF WORKED ON THIS THREAD UNDER THE TRUCK ENGINE SECTION AND HAVEN'T GOT MUCH ACTIVITY, SO I'M TRYING HERE. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!.....I HAVE A 1989 D150 318TBI THAT NEEDS A NEW ENGINE. I ALSO HAVE A 1975 SPORTSMAN RV 318 THAT NEEDS A HOME. WHAT I NEED TO KNOW, IS...WILL THERE BE ANY PROBLEMS WITH THIS SWAP? MY PLAN IS TO TAKE THE SPORTSMAN'S ENGINE AND PUT IT IN THE D150, THROW OUT THE TBI AND GO 4BAR. CARB. I ALSO NEED TO KNOW IF THERE WILL BE ANYMORE PROBLEMS BEING THAT THE D150 HAS A COMPUTER AND THE SPORTSMAN DID NOT. I'M NOT SOLD ON THE COMPUTER STAYING IN UNLESS I HAVE TO HAVE IT IN FOR THE OTHER STUFF TO WORK (IE: O/D) AND WHATEVER ELSE WAS CONTROLLED BY THE COMPUTER.
physically it's a bolt in swap but you didn't say what you plan to do for ignition.you will have to run new fuel lines to fuel pump on the motor. i don't know if the fuel gauge and oil pressure gauge will work with the computer. the o.d. trans is not a problem its just a solenoid in the trans. that turns on and off with the switch on the dash.if it were me i would keep the fuel injection etc.
there were changes made along the way like improving the cylinder heads and going to a roller cam but basically the same engine.i think you will have to carry over the heads from the Ram engine to use the intake manifold as the bolt pattern was changed with the newer heads.one the older heads the bolts for the intake were at an angle and now they are straight up and down.also need to drill and tap 2 holes on back of block to hold the crank sensor.also carry over the mounts from the Ram as well.also take a good at the oil pan and pickup you didn't say if it's 4x4 or not but the pans are different.you may need to change the timing cover to mount the alt. p.s pump and a/c don't know for sure on that.maybe it's the same and just need to block off the fuel pump.
