Default Cummins Conversion

Hello, I have a 1990 W250 with a 360v8 in it and I would like to put a Cummins in it, my question is, will the stock 4 speed that came with the truck (which I believe is the NP445) work with the 24valve Cummins?

Not stout enough, even if you could find a way to bolt it up. A Getrag 5spd was stock behind the early 12 valve mtrs. Sorta weak also. Go with the NV4500.

Agreed. The NV4500 does have an issue with the 5th gear nut falling off. There are updates, just fix it before you install it. You could go with the 6 speed NV5600 also.
Best bet is to find a motor trans combo, so you'll have everything you need.

ok thanks for the info, i was thinking about putting one of the Cummins 24v common rail engines in the truck, since painless now makes a wiring harness for them

Should be a fairly easy swap, since some already came with the Cummins. Do you already have the motor? Don't overlook the 12 valve, way less electronics to worry about. Dodge has motor mounts etc. but if you get a wreck/rust-out that already has the diesel you'll have most of the parts you need. There are some things, like the intercooler and piping, you'll need.

Good luck with the swap, ask me anything about the Cummins. If I don't know, I'll direct you to someone who does.

i dont have the engine yet, i was going to look around in junkyards for a wreck, and i have thought about putting the 12v in the truck because they sound the best i think, but i read somewhere that you cant get that much power out of the 12v, is this true???

where ever your herd that roomer its a lie. you can get stupid amounts of power out of that engine!!! turnen the fuel pump, the fuel pin, and the pump timing does a ton! puting on a bigger turbo helps get rid of the smoke cuz it puts in more air to burn bigger exhuast pipe helps cool the EGT's a little as well as an CAC. A ported and polished head, intake, and manifold makes even more poneys the ISB 6BT 12V ia a detuned hot rod engine. i know a couple of guys that put on the 24V head and put on the 12V PLN system and john deer nozels on their trucksto make even more power, as long as you dont mind smoke that engine will do what you want.

12V's are cheaper to get power from, mostly DIY stuff. 24V's you need to buy expensive chips or boxes. Many of the big pullers and racers run 12V's, some run 24V heads and 12V injection pumps.

Not sure on the mounts. Dodge has them if needed, or you can make them. Probably the best motor you can get is the '96-'98 12v standard trans. It will have the 215 pump, which can be tuned up quite a bit. Heck, just cutting the fuel plate to a #100 will double the hp, but you'll need a b***er turbo.
Try to get the whole truck, you'll need the fuel tank, among other things.
