Always remember that starter, I played hell with this. I did all the work to my truck at school since I'm in auto and I have a shop at my disposal. For one, I had to take out the starter, layed it on the leaf spring I believe and left it connected. I installed the header and tried to reinstall the starter and clink clink it was stuck between the header, leaf spring, and body I think. Took forever to get it out and put back in, since your arms are dying from holding it up and you are trying to finish it in a hurry. Got in to fire up the truck and nothing. We had to tinker with the starter and finally got it running. Respect your starter haha. I ran open headers from school to home, about a 15 minute ride. The most annoying thing I've ever been through. I love loud trucks more than anyone else, but having it exit right underneath your seat erases the ability to have a thought in your head and the ability to have a conversation with the person next to you. I also had a problem with the truck cutting out. Scary **** when it cuts out on the highway or when you turn onto the main road in town. It disappeared when I got the exhaust done, but I also got the o2 sensor welded in so I don't know which fixed it. But the only thing I didn't like about the headers themselves was the bolts, too big and awkward to install in that tight of a spot. I have around $900 invested in my exhaust, I got an inspection ticket because my truck was so loud and I had to get my cats welded back in so they charged me $200 to do that. If I could go back in time, I wouldn't install the headers, I got plenty of acceleration just replacing the old stock exhaust system. I would've just ran straight pipes from the manifolds.

I'm just wondering about the header install since I'm doing a motor swap on an 89 d100 going from a 3.9 to a 5.2 and one of my manifolds is cracked for the 318. My question is if I put headers can I remove all the garbage for the smog pump? I noticed a big block on the passenger side valve cover with a ton of vacuum lines and wires and I kinda need to know if it would affect the way it runs to remove all that stuff since it's wired into the ecm? The reason I ask is because the smog pump that came on the 318 is garbage now and I don't wanna buy a new one lol. So far I have $50 invested in the truck and new engine and transmission and I don't wanna go much over $200 for the whole thing lol.

i took off the belt and plugged the vacuum line without issue. i could be fined for not having all factory emissions stuff hooked up, so i wont remove it entirely. Wheni take it in for emissions every two years, i juist throw the belt back on.

No worries, I just ripped all that stuff off my 86 W150 this weekend when I went from the original 2bbl to a Performer intake and a Holley 450 Economaster on my 318. I ran a 3/4 hose from one cat converter tube to the other. The rest of that stuff is gone. Before doing that, be sure to check your local laws (are you in a smog check city?).

No theres no emissions checks down here, anything 95 or older is pretty much lights, mirrors and glass. 96 and newer have to be hooked up to the OBD II but none use the sniffer test. And if fail I can always do it myself since i got a liscense lol.

Oh and thanks for the info on the smog system, thats good to know I don't have to keep track of all that junk and buy a new smog pump. Plus the exhaust is going on 21 years old so I was just going to make a new one with a pair of hooker mufflers I have in my shop.

yea rip it all out. one thing though, if you take the pump off the truck altogether, youll have to either plug the socket for the air pump in the manifold (which is hard b/c of the spot) or pu tnew manifolds. Your best bet is prolly to cut the AIR lines leaving about a half inch sticking out of the manifold and braize a plumbing-type cap

Cool, I was planning on a set of Jeg's headers because one of the manifolds is cracked down where the collector bolts up "missing a bolt-hole tab", Thats more why I was wondering about the smog stuff, i don't wanna have to go through the trouble of making some flanges and cutting and welding on the headers and buying a new smog pump if I don't have to.
