Downshifting problems? 83 d150
I have an 83' d150 with 318 auto. I have made quite a few repairs to get it running right. Now when I first begin driving, if I accelerate quickly it will stall out and quit, or when I make a yeilding turn and then hit the gas it will do the same thing. After I drive a few miles it will not do it, it will run fine and accelrate fine. It seems as if it will not downshift, or its flooding and stalling out. It will start right back up. Once again, after a couple miles of driving, it runs and accelerates fine. It is a concern now because it did this to me yeaterday when I was making a turn, I had cars behind me, and a car coming in the other lane. Any thoughts? Transmission or possibly the choke is still engaged and its just flooding?
Sounds like the choke is not right or maybe the heat riser passages in the intake manifold and/or heads are plugged with carbon. A carburetor cleaning & rebuild kit along with a tune up may fix it also.
I have already rebuilt the carb. How do I check the intake? As far as the heads, I guess im looking at a teardown? I dont think its the choke now. I waited untill the truck warmed up, then opened the air cleaner and the choke was full open position, then it did the same thing. Got better after a few miles. This time it did not clear up completly but did get better. So no one seems to think its the tranny. This is good news!
The Ignition control module could be bad but most of the time if they are bad you cant even start your truck http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/Pro...pe=194&PTSet=A
Have you done card rebuilds before, adjusted the jets correctly?
Have you adjusted the timing yet or replaced the vacuum lines? The line might seem find but even a little vacuum can cause the line to collapse. SO during hard acceleration and the vacuum a little higher might be causing it.
Hopefully it is not your transmission, it doesnt seem like it from what your describing.

I have done carbs before, mainly on bikes and small engines. There actually isnt anything that can really be adjusted on this carb other than idle and float level. The timing is spot on, and I just re-confirmed that on sunday. The vacuum lines may be something to look into. Afterall they are over 25 years old.
Def sounds to me like a control modual chip. It is located under the rotar in the distributer. Classic problems is studdering at the low end. Random stalling, loss of power, missing. You can tell if its bad if the chip appiers to be lifting slightly, causing intermitant ignition. I have had the problem on my ram, and a quick 2 min swich of the chip made all the difference. You cna pick them up at a wrecking yard for nothing.
