Voltage Regulator
Howdy Mates,
I just got a '79 power wagon with a slant 6
My first dodge
My lights flicker when I drive (instrument, headlights etc). So I'm checking out the electrical. I notice I'm getting 17v at the battery when over 1000rpm. I replaced voltage regulator. Still getting 17v. Alternator seems to put out 13v at idle and 17v at 1000rpm. Any ideas why I'm getting 17v at the battery? Is this ok? Might this have anything to do with my lights flickering?
Thanks A Heap,
dib

also, so is the green wire going from alternator the wire that tells me if im getting charge? When i unplug it i see no chrgae happening? If so, does that mean the red wire is the exciter wire?
Thanks,

more info, i pulled the red wire from the alt. It has 0ohm resistance to ground. Er...thats not good right? Should i follow that wire around and look for a short? Looks like it heads to a egr timer, then a ballast resistor then ignition coil. Please advice.
Thanks,

Dib,read Draco's post again. System should be as described. If the red's the hot wire then the coil etc. will give you continuity. Chrysler used two or three different colors over the years. Can't remember which is which for what years lol.
