new carb and intake?
Hello,
So my truck has a 1 barrel carb. Its pretty weak. I'm sure it has other issues too, but I'm thinking i might start by getting a 2 barrel carb. My buddy says I will need to get a new intake manifold to get the most out of the new carb. This is for a 79 power wagon 3.7. Does this sound like a good plan? Will I have a hard time finding a manifold and carb for this setup? I'm very new to D.I.Y auto work.
THanks,
dib

I believe offenhouser offers a fourbarrel intake, you could consider that and use an adapter plate, or head to the junk yard and see if you can find a mid 70's aspen or the such with a super six which came out with a two barrel.
The slant 6 will respond to modifications, but it'll take a lot of 'em. You only have about 95hp to begin with. I doubt a 2bbl will make much difference over the single.
You're kinda limited on options but unless you need to do a lot of highway driving, the best cure for the 6's lack of guts [other than a 440]would be some lower gears in the axles. Some 4.56s will do more to give the 6 cyl some grunt than engine mods. You most likely have 3.91s now. The engine will spin faster on the highway, about 55-60 mph will be about it without running the motor to death. [Depending on tire size] BTW,you'll like 4 low with the 4.56s/31.5 tire.
Having said all that, for slant 6 hot rod parts try Clifford Engineering. [Clifford Performance?] If you swap intakes, add a header too, that'll help the torque somewhat too. Just don't expect miracles from the slant 6. Dig around through the slant 6 forums on the net and see what you come up with for performance mods. Keep torque in mind.
