my engine is not running well! It used to make a winding noise after I would turn the engine off. A mechanic friend told me that was the engine resetting for the next start, it does not do it any longer. Does anyone know what made that sound? 318 throttle body

I suspect what you mean is you heard something like air excaping or something? Sometimes after running the powersteering will have pressure built up that releases back into the pump. As for the 'resetting for the next start' idea, thats a new one on me. I've never heard that before. As for the engine, whats been done to it and have you tried anything to cure the problem? when was it last tuned up?

the whir is the fuel pump going and you should hear it after shutting the engine off.

if the car is not runnig well, feeling weak or sluggish, and you no londer hear that noise then perhaps you need a new fuel pump. But it must be doing at elast something otherwise the car wouldnt start.

the fuel pump has been replaced! the sound came from under the hood and the pump is in the tank.
what controls the idle when the engine is warm, once it warms up I have to pop it in neutral to keep it running.

The idle I believe on a tbi is controled through a throttle position senser. I could be mistaken. As for the winding sound after shut down, I recall a few years back of an after market pre-oiler that was a big trend. after you shut your rig off a pump would circulate oil through the engine to supposedly help fight against lack of oil at start up. A PO may have installed such an item on your truck and the pump went bad.

I am the original owner, no such oiler. It has been mentioned to me that the sound was the cold start solenoid located on the side of the TBI.

Idle Speed Control. It controls engine speed when the motor's cold,or A/C kicks on,you put in gear, etc. And yep it's on the TB, and they are somewhat trouble prone. The whir is the control closing the throttle when you turn off the key, opening when you turn it on. You can unplug it, and turn the adjuster screw to set the idle up until you can get one. However, mine's been running fine unplugged for a couple of years,a little grumpy cold but not bad.

thanks! I have replaced this in the past but have not been able get it to operate correctly.
I will check it again and try to get it to work, if all else fails I will do as you say. I still have an issue with the engine when it is hot. After 20 minutes of run time i lose my idle and have to keep it running when i stop. RPM's drop and oil pressure drops, i think the oil pressure drops because of low rpm's? The engine does not burn oil and has full power most of the time. Every sensor on the engine has been replaced, ox sensor more than once. the computer is new and so are the injectors. The engine has been smoke tested for vacuum leaks and checked out OK. I have had it to 5 different shops, including the dealer. Compression test checked out fine. I am getting a reading of 12v. at the ox sensor when it should be .5 to .9 depending on the engine temp. I checked the wire to ground and got no reading(power off) This is still a nice truck and i don't want to give up!
