Default 4 wheel drive question.?

ok i recently bought a 85 dodge ram 4x4 auto. ok when i put in in 4 low it will go in to 4 low but the front wheels wont lock in. what do i need to check to c if i have a vaccum line off or if something isnt locking in right.? or is there a place on here that has a pic of wh at i need to look at? thanks

I don't believe the 85 used any vacume in the transfercase. I take it your four high is working fine? If so, it sounds like you may have internal issues with the case.

no both 4 h and 4 L dont kick in. the hubs wont lock in in both. wish i had a manual lock in i could just lock them in.

Ah ok. So have you crawled under the truck and tried to twist the front drive shaft while its in 4by? if the case is locking in, you may get you wish and have to swap hubs.

Even if just one hub is bad the drive shaft will turn with the case in 2hi or neutral, if you have an open [no limited slip or locker] differential. Basically the same as lifting one front tire on an obstacle. If spinning the shaft by hand makes the hubs lock then the case is likely screwed, but a partially screwed hub will unlock under power also,so that's not a sure thing test. Pull the hubs and see if they're stripped or busted,clean 'em up and pack a little grease in 'em. When you're sure they're working[and the gears in the diff. aren't screwed lol] move on to the case.
