Gear Synchronizer vs Clutch

Default Gear Synchronizer vs Clutch

Hello,
It seems to me a clutch and gear synchronizers preform almost the exact same task. Im wondering why cars need both. Is the clutch more about building torque and not so much about getting the rpms matching on the input and output sides? In theory, how do the clutch and gear synchronizers fill different needs? Sorry for rambling.

They serve totally different functions. The clutch allows the engine to disengage from the drive train so you can stop the truck without the engine having to stop. The synchronizers allow you to shift without matching the engine RPMs to the speed of the drive train. You can shift the truck without using the clutch if you match the engine RPMs with the speed of the drive train. I have a 62 Mack dump truck with no syncros and you have to know what the heck you are doing to shift it without grinding the gears off.

My 79 W150 - 4 speed manual will not shift between gears, when not moving, unless I'm pressing in the clutch. Any idea why this is? This is the last spot concerning the clutch that confuses me.

Er, thanks. I wasn't pushing hard enough. I pushed a little harder on the shifter and popped right into gear. I just had to hit it with my purse

From talking to the people I have access to, I get the sense that the clutch and tranny are confusing for many people. I think I have a clear picture *now*. I would love to talk it over to make sure I'm on the right page. Nemesis, what do you find confusing?
